“The versatility offered by my Rath Trombone is truly outstanding. The heavy bronze slide has a smooth, quick action and together with the red brass bell produces a deep, warm resonant sound with outstanding clarity and projection. The 41BB bronze leadpipe has added another level of tonal colour that simply refuses to “break up” even at the most extreme dynamics! This set up delivers superb responses in all registers and meets all my performance needs across a multitude of music settings. Thank you Michael and all the Rath Team!” Paul Woodward – Rath Trombones Artist.

Born in Oldham, Paul Woodward was introduced to the instrument by his father, who was an accomplished trombonist within the Salvation Army, and it was his early influence and tuition that inspired Paul to learn to play the trombone.

As Principal Trombone of the “A” Band at the famous Cobham Hall Music School, as well as the Household Troops Band and Egon Virtuosi Brass, Paul gained great experience and guidance from well-known and respected musical leaders such as Norman Bearcroft, Robert Redhead, James Williams, Stephen Cobb and Don Jenkins.

In 2003 Paul joined Black Dyke Band under the direction of Prof. Nicholas Childs and in 2004 was appointed the first ever Co Principal Trombone player in the history of the band. After 16 enjoyable years with Black Dyke, Paul took the decision in June 2019 to step down as Co Principal Trombone to dedicate more time to his ever-increasing solo career.

Paul considers it a privilege to have been guest soloist with many notable “SA Bands” including the New York Staff Band, Chicago Staff Band and Enfield Citadel Band to name a few and is in constant international demand having performed in Chicago, Florida, Ireland, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Singapore, Philadelphia and Bermuda.

Paul enjoys the opportunity to tutor and encourage players of all ages. Travelling the world Paul has appeared as guest soloist, conductor and clinician at the Singapore Low Brass Arts Festival, Star Lake Music Camp, Florida Music Institute, Eastern Michigan Music Camp, USA Southern Territory Music Institute and Chicago Music Institute.

Married to Sarah in 1992, they live in Yorkshire with their daughter Emma and son Daniel.

Paul is proud to play exclusively Michael Rath Brass Instruments.
